Linda Greenlaw is one of the most popular and richest Sailor who was born on December 22, 1960 in Connecticut, United States. Linda Greenlaw, born December 22, 1960, is a best-selling author who writes books on maritime themes. She is also the only female captain of a swordfishing boat on the East Coast. She was featured in The Perfect Storm, a 1997 book, and The Perfect Storm film.
Greenlaw’s 1999 book The Hungry Ocean, described a one month swordfishing expedition. It included “among other things treacherous weather and uncooperative fish, wild entertainment shipmates, and the exhausting pressure of ten consecutive 21 hour days.” The Lobster Chronicles: The Life on a Very Small Island (1999), All Fishermen Are Liars – True Tales from a Dry Dock Bar (2004) and Seaworthy: A Swordboat captain Returns to The Sea (2010). Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mom (2013) were her subsequent books. Greenlaw co-authored two cookbooks along with Martha Greenlaw and published four novels about detective fiction — Slipknot (2007) and Fisherman’s Bend (2008) and Shiver Hitch (2017). She also wrote Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mother (2013).
Greenlaw was the winner of the American Library Association’s Alex Award in 2000, United States Maritime Literature Award in 2003, and the New England Book Award for nonfiction in 2004.
On May 28, 2009, Greenlaw was convicted of illegally entering and illegally fishing in Canadian waters by the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Crown asked for a fine of CAD$53,000, while the defense recommended a fine of half that amount. She was fined $38,000 after the judge found she did not use “due diligence”.
Greenlaw moved to Isle au Haut in 1997 and purchased a 35-foot lobster boat, the Mattie Belle.

Greenlaw, the daughter Jim and Martha Greenlaw, was born in Connecticut. Her father was an information system manager at Bath Iron Works. Her family was raised in Topsham in Maine. She spent her summers in Isle au Haut (a 70-person village off the coast of Maine), with her father. Greenlaw studied English and government at Colby College. Linda was a deckhand and cook aboard the Walter Leeman sword-fishing vessel during summers to help pay for college. After graduating in 1983, Linda continued to work on the boat in her spare time. In 1986, Alden Leeman purchased a second boat and appointed Greenlaw as the swordfish captain.
Greenlaw was captain of the Hannah Boden when Andrea Gail drowned in the Atlantic during the 1991 Perfect Storm. Sebastian Junger’s 1997 novel The Perfect Storm, and the movie version in which Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio played Greenlaw, depict Greenlaw’s warnings to Andrea Gail of the approaching storm. Junger called Greenlaw “one of the greatest captains on the East Coast” and not only the only female captain in swordfishing.
Greenlaw wrote three best-selling books about life as a commercial fisher: The Hungry Ocean in 1999, The Lobster Chronicles in 2002 and All Fishermen Are Liars in 2002.
