Jean Yoon is an American-born Canadian actress, writer, playwright, and voiceover artist. She is best known for originating the role of family matriarch Umma in the 2011 play Kim’s Convenience as well as in the award-winning CBC Television series adapted from the play. She grew up in Toronto, Ontario.

In the early 1980s, Jean Yoon began her acting career as a theatre artist.

Between 2005 and 2006, she played the recurring role of June Kim in the legal comedy-drama television series titled This Is Wonderland.

She co-starred as Belinda Lok in the CBC miniseries, Dragon Boys, in 2007 and this role got her nominated for a Gemini Award.

Jean Yoon played the character of Dr. Montague in the 2009 American romantic science-fiction drama film, The Time Traveler’s Wife, which stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.

In 2016, she started appearing as Mrs. Yong-mi Kim (“Umma”), the family matriarch whose life revolves around the store, family, and church, in the CBC Television sitcom, Kim’s Convenience. Jean Yoon co-starred in the show alongside Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Andrea Bang, Simu Liu, Andrew Phung, and Nicole Power.

For her performance in Kim’s Convenience, she won the 2017 ACTRA Award for “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress” and was also nominated for 3 Canadian Screen Awards.

She has written many plays, poems, and essays.

Jean Yoon wrote The Yoko Ono Project, a multi-media performance art comedy about Yoko Ono, her art, and her impact. This won her a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination and a Jessie Richardson Award.
