Body yet to be identified after discovery in Yarra river

A man whose body was pulled from the Yarra River in Melbourne’s central business district overnight has been identified by police.

Detectives are looking into the man’s cause of death, which is not believed to be suspicious at this early stage in their investigation.

Emergency services were called to Southbank Blvd, in the Victorian capital’s Southbank entertainment precinct, about 7.30pm on Saturday.

It’s understood a member of the public raised the alarm after spotting the body floating in the Yarra.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday afternoon emergency services had responded to reports the man’s body was found.

Police have identified the man as a 75-year-old from Hampton Park, a suburb in Melbourne’s outer southeast in the City of Casey local government area.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The Yarra River is the main river which runs through the Melbourne’s city centre and northeastern suburbs.
